We are excited for the September 2025 release of THE NATURE OF OUR TIMES--

About the Project
This project was initially inspired by the National Climate Assessment (NCA) and the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP)'s first ever National Nature Assessment (NNA1) under the authority of the Global Change Research Act of 1990.
The report aimed to focus on themes surrounding Conservation and Natural Resource Management, Economic Interests, Human Health and Well-Being, and Safety and Security, with the cross-cutting areas of Climate Change and Equity woven throughout proposed themes as identified through federal agency, public, and Tribal engagement efforts.
In light of recent national developments, (NCA Director) Dr. Philip Levin is continuing this important work under the umbrella of United By Nature to build "a first-of-its-kind national assessment of U.S. lands, waters, and wildlife."
This work is "... rooted in science, guided by communities, and enriched by public participation... [and] led by a diverse, independent team of America’s top scientists, researchers, and practitioners.
The Anthology
We view our poetry anthology THE NATURE OF OUR TIMES as an additional opportunity to highlight the work that United By Nature is doing, and to share the experiences and hopes of a diversity of voices from across the country. This project is offered through collaboration with The Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University and Poets for Science.

We sought poems that speak to the immense value of nature—for our children and future generations, for our own and the planet’s well-being, and the resilience and survival of our communities. We are looking for poems that query our current practices and what needs to change in our consideration of the natural world, and that show new understandings of what it means to co-exist in it.
Submissions that were accepted for the online gallery were automatically entered into consideration for the print anthology.
From over 2,300 submissions, about 230 poems were selected in February 2025, for the print anthology to be released from Paloma Press in September 2025.
